Professionalism & Qualities to Look For When Hiring a Private Investigator - Author: The #RightPI

When looking to hire a Private Investigator there are a few basic boxes that you should check before hiring an investigator. How do you know that you have hired the #RightPI ? This is a question we have asked our clients for years in many ways and forms over social media.  If you are one of our many clients thank you for your business. We consider it a privilege to continue to serve you.

First and foremost, the Private Investigator should be Licensed by the State, Region or Territory that you are requesting the services. Most states in the USA require a professional license in order to provide services as a Private Investigator (there are a few exceptions like Idaho, Mississippi, South Dakota & Wyoming.) In some states, although they do not require a PI license , they do require a business license like in Anchorage and in Fairbanks Alaska. In California you must be licensed by the State of California and you can check the License Status thru the California Department of Consumer Affairs - Bureau of Security and Investigative Services Division  here:  https://search.dca.ca.gov/ Always check to make sure that the PI License is current and in good standing with the state of origin.

Nextlook to see how long the Private Investigator or Agency has been in business. Check to see if the Agency or Investigator is Insured. Look for professional reviews of the investigator's work from prior clients from testimonials on their website or Google Reviews. Are they professional recommendtions?

Another good thing to look for is whether or not the Private Investigator is affiliated or a member of any professional associations. Professional Associations often exist to raise the standards in the profession and industry by offering continuing education and professional certifications. Right Path Investigations is affiliated and a current member of CALI - California Association of Licensed Investigators, NCISS - National Council of Investigation and Security Services, CDIA - California Defense Investigators Association and the NDIA - National Defender Investigation Association. Like Doctors and Professionals that work in the trades, most Private Investigators specialize in one or a few areas of expertise. You wouldn't hire a foot doctor or Podiatrist for a Ear, Nose and Throat ailment. For the same reason you should always consider the #RightPI for your situation and needs.

Here at Right Path Investigations (#RightPI) we have been working Criminal Defense Investigations for more than 26 years. We have built a solid business on conducting Background Investigations, Criminal Investigations, to include Civil Investigations and are well known nationwide for our abilities to locate hard to find witnesses or subject's of an investigation to include missing persons.

We are professionally networked locally, nationally and globally. In the event we are not the investigative specialist you are looking for we can always refer you or find the perfect partner for your specific situation. No matter what you decide to do please make sure that you check the basic boxes that we have outlined and listed above. If we can help you find the Right Path to the Information you need...

Legality of GPS tracking of vehicles and persons

I get requests all the time as a Private Investigator in California to track down people. I wouldn't be doing a service to my client's without posting this and addressing this topic.

Frequently asked Question(s) below / with Answers:

Client - Question: Can I GPS track someone in a vehicle?

RPI - Question Back:  Who is the person you want to track?

Client - Example answers:
My company vehicle, personal vehicle, my minor child's vehicle owned and registered to me.

RPI -   Answer (Yes)

Client  - My ex-boyfriend, ex-husband, one of my co-workers.

RPI -   Answer (No)

Important Note:

It is generally legal to use a GPS tracking device if:

-You or your company/organization own's the vehicle (or asset) to be tracked
-You own the asset that may be taken without your permission
-Your children (under 18) are the focus of the tracking
-You are tracking the asset for the purpose of legal repossession in the event of a loan default

It is generally "illegal" to use a GPS tracking device if:

-You are not the owner of the vehicle and do not have the legal right to track it
-You are attempting to track a boyfriend or girlfriend or ex-spouse in their own car

Client - Question: How do I know if my vehicle is being GPS tracked?

RPI - Answer:  a TSCM (Technical Surveillance Counter Measure) investigation may be needed to
"bug or  GPS sweep" your vehicle.

Client:  - Who can I contact for this TSCM investigation service?

RPI: -    Question:  Do You Know The RightPI?    visit:     www.rightpi.com

or  call us at  (916) 905-2559

Get Trained, Observe & Report Suspicious Activity

There has never been a better time to follow my last post on continuing your education than now to plug Code 4's course "Front Desk Safety" after the tragic events that unfolded this Wednesday December 2, 2015 in San Bernadino, Ca that has claimed 14 lives and critically injured dozens more. There have been reports that have ranged from the co-workers to the immediate neighbors of the 2 shooters (and don't forget pipe bombers or terrorists as defined by the F.B.I. ) that there was plenty of suspicious activity leading up to the violent events that have transpired up to and including the shooters directly communicating with known terrorists being watched by the F.B.I.

Ironically there is a course being taught today on 12/4/15 in Sacramento as I type this post. I myself plan on trying to attend the next scheduled course if at all possible, merely to have the information.

To read more about this and other courses visit:

Tip of the Month: "Get Trained, Observe and Report" any and all suspicious activity that you may see in your neighborhood, workplace and/or in public places this holiday season as it is our duty as Americans.

I am sure that these neighbors wish that they would have reported what they observed before this tragic event unfolded. Read more about this at:

Got Training & Continuing Education?

If you are not learning, you are not growing. Plain and simple.

Your knowledge base or information gathered that you make decisions will direct your life. In the western United States we have been plagued with an extreme drought these past few years.  It is not hard to picture plant growth without water. Whether your continued learning is a refresher course on Specialized Investigation Techniques, or new knowledge as technical as Computer Science or Data Science, Ethical Hacking often to referred to as "White Hat hacking", Interviewing Techniques, a CCW (Concealed Carry Weapon) course, it really doesn't matter as long as you continue to learn and excercise your noodle.

I do not get one penny for plugging or advertising for any one business or organization but I would be remiss to write this short blog and not try to point you in the direction of learning and growth. So here it goes:

https://www.sans.org/
https://www.blackhat.com/us-15/training/
https://www.hetheringtongroup.com/about.shtml
http://www.learningexchange.com/
http://www.code4.org/

I will be looking for a course to begin and bring in the new year myself. Many of us excercise our physical bodies, but when was the last time you excercised your brain?
